About INSTC

FACTS

FURUNO INS Training Center is located in Hvidovre, some 20 minutes from the Copenhagen city center and airport.

The training at INSTC is a combination of basic theory and practical hands-on use of our equipment. This combined man-machine interface (MMI) enables the trainees to obtain the relevant skills to navigate any vessel that carries an INS/IBS or an ECDIS.

The practical hands-on training is conducted on a full mission simulator (Class S), which gives the trainees an opportunity to operate the system in all kinds of conceivable situations in realistic environment. This way, the trainees can generate operator experience with various circumstances, while still in the safe environment of a class room.

The training courses are conducted in groups between 4 and 8 trainees to ensure the best possible outcome for each trainee. All certified training courses are conducted with assessment of the trainees' performance through written and practical tests, which have to be passed in order to receive a certificate.

HISTORY

FURUNO INS Training Center was established in March 2005. Originally, INSTC was established to educate crewmembers onboard vessels that carry FURUNO Integrated Navigation System "INS VOYAGER". Today INSTC is FURUNO's primary facility for education of navigators to achieve proficiency in operating various navigation- and communication equipment, independent of manufacturer.

In November 2005, INSTC was, as the first equipment manufacturer-owned training facility, awarded the Certificate of Approval by DNV SeaSkill™ for the IMO ECDIS model course 1.27.

Since then, INSTC has continued to develop high quality training courses, which today includes INS/IBS training, bridge team management (BTM), bridge resource management (BRM), customized training and much more.

Quality Assurance

INSTC complies with the USCG (US Coast Guard) governing standards of simulators, as specified in STCW-95 (Standard of Training, Certification and Watch-keeping), A-1/12. All training courses provided at INSTC complies with the IMO STCW-95 convention, the IMO resolution a.817 (19), MSC 64(7), annex 5 and MSC 86(70), annex 4.

The INSTC has received the certificate of approval by DNV SeaSkill? (Det Norske Veritas) for the ECDIS training course, according to IMO course model 1.27.

Facilities

The theoretical training takes place in light, spacey classrooms furnished with modern AV-equipment.

All practical training sessions are carried out on a full-mission navigation simulator, which gives the trainees an opportunity to operate the system in the most realistic environment possible. The use of a full-mission simulator also enables the instructors to create awkward situations for navigators like navigating through dense traffic, storms or rough weather, high seas or any other situations, to allow the trainees to test their skills in the safe environment of a simulator bridge and classroom.
